Storm Drain Mural Contest

Storm drain mural contest

Up for a swim? What about a swim in a storm drain? Next time you head for the beach, think about this: all over our island, water flows from Mount Takpochau down into our storm drains, taking with it all the trash and pollution from our watersheds – all of it eventually ending up in the ocean where we swim and fish.

Are you an artist who wants to make a difference?

Submit your storm drain art to BECQ by FRIDAY MARCH 19 to win prize money and the chance to paint your message in Garapan for everyone to see! Help Save our Seas!

For this event: Students will receive Service Learning/Community Service hours and the BECQ

Storm Drain Committee will provide the paint and other materials for contestants.

storm drain award ceremony

Hafa Adai, Tirow CNMI from team BECQ!

We are pleased to highlight the 2021 Storm Drain Murals all designed by our very own talented Kagman High School artists after the concluded project challenge in support of "Environmental Awareness" and "World Oceans" Month events. Entries were judged based on how effective the art draws public attention to the fact that storm drains lead to the ocean, and dumping in them is act of pollution.

Congratulations to the following winners

  • Marylyn Cepeda (1st Place)
  • Joan Tomokane (2nd Place)
  • Mikyla Capalad (3rd Place)
  • Rosemarie Faisao (Honorable mention)
  • Xin Yi Ni (Honorable mention)
  • Kayla San Nicolas (Honorable mention)
  • Ignasia Sablan (Honorable mention)
  • Kina Julia Camacho (Honorable mention)

It is for you to see!

Find them around the Garapan, Paseo De Marianas area. Help share a flash photo on-site when passing by to "make known" and inform our local community and visitors about the existing connection between storm drains, pollution and the impacts on our aquatic life.
